Trading the NY stage for love

September 1st, 2010 Comments Off

The glamorous modern-dance world of Twyla Tharp eventually lost Margery Knyper to love and life in San Francisco. Margery, a dancer with what would have to be considered by many an enviable stage career in New York, is a beautiful soft-spoken woman who lives very much in the present. Her days as wife to San Francisco cabinet-maker Len Knyper, one time guest on Love Letters Live, is where the spotlight shines now.

What would make this woman, who lived with the excitement and energy of the New York dance world, leave it for one man she met quite accidentally on a day she hoped to see the Pope on his visit to the United States? » Read the rest of this entry «

Give a green and lasting gift

Green used to be a just a color. In the current vernacular, however, it also means environmentally correct. In San Francisco as in a growing number of cities, going green is almost mandatory. We’re all supposed to be looking for ways to reduce our carbon imprint on this planet. » Read the rest of this entry «

An airline worth a love letter

August 18th, 2010 Comments Off

Walking down Sutter Street near Union Square in San Francisco a few months ago I saw an adorable cluster of high-spirited young men and women all wearing Virgin Airlines tee-shirts. As I had just flown to and from New York on Virgin America and was still smiling from the experience, I motioned to the group with clapping hands and said simply, “Hooray Virgin Airlines. My favorite!” Well, they joyously surrounded me and asked for details. I think Virgin America is an airline worth a love letter, and, in fact, I sent them one. You know The Squad is adamant about sending letters of whole-hearted appreciation for service, attitude and products that make life truly better. Virgin American starts off new teammates with a very original orientation, and the grand finale is a city-wide scavenger hunt in San Francisco. Well, just my luck that after my exceptional flight experience with Virgin I had the double pleasure of meeting this enchanting group. I told them a love letter to Virgin was on my very important to-do list. So just to encourage you to do the same when you are happy with a company, here is what I said.

“Dear Virgin America, Thanks to you for the most wonderful flight experience  to NY and back. From the very intelligent and effective telephone help we got in navigating our way through making online reservations until we were safe back home Virgin America was the best. » Read the rest of this entry «

Don’t give up!

August 11th, 2010 Comments Off

Guess what, to become an expert – at anything – takes time and practice.

A common excuse for not writing letters, we hear all the time, is: “I’m not good at writing.” Most people aren’t good at writing when they begin. (Remember your efforts in first grade?) » Read the rest of this entry «

Michael begins his interview with the quote from Oscar Wilde: “Children begin by loving their parents; as they grow older they judge them; sometimes they forgive them.”  He states he wants to disprove that “rule,” and prepares to write to his mother to let her know that even with the difficulties she faced, he knows she did her best.

Then we write a letter to his mother to let her know he understands and accepts.

Hooray for the man to man love note

August 4th, 2010 Comments Off

There is something about a man to man love letter that is especially endearing. Maybe because, as common lore has it, men have a harder time expressing themselves emotionally. I have rarely heard a woman say, “I don’t like the mushy stuff,” and I use that particular phrase because I have heard more than one man say that when it came to sending a love letter even to the women they adore.

Almost a year ago a friend of mine wrote what he considered a simple thank you note to a men’s club associate who hosted one of the luncheons. “Dear Buddy,” he starts out, chummy, familiar with a hint of cozy. He goes on to say “First, thank you for including me to share a privileged event with you.” I like that “First.” It means stay tuned, more to come. » Read the rest of this entry «

Love letter for your father-in-law

July 28th, 2010 Comments Off

Did you know that July 30 is “Father-in-law Day?” If you have a father-in-law to honor with a love letter and you need an excuse to write and send one, this is the perfect opportunity.

Tell the man the many reasons you love and admire your spouse, and give your father-in-law lots of credit for instilling those fine qualities. You’ll make the old guy’s day – maybe his whole week or year. » Read the rest of this entry «
